Celcom Cupcake Challenge Finals

Submitting one's cupcake design online seems easy enough. But replicating your submission in public in front of hundred of pairs of eyes is certainly quite daunting! And that was the challenge that the 55 finalists of Celcom Cupcake Challenge went through in Publika yesterday.
700 entries were received from 664 unique participants of which 55 were chosen to take part in the finals. Old and young battled it out. All walks of life had their share of fun in Publika. Ultimately 3 top winners had to be chosen based on creativity, uniqueness, best decoration and closest match to their submitted online entries with the 1Malaysia theme.
I reckon that this lil girl must be the youngest participant.
No one participated in vain since everyone received something for their efforts. 97 participants with the most likes receive a LG Prada mobile phone each. The other 564 other participants receive a RM200 voucher that can be used at any bluecube outlet in Malaysia. 

Congratulations to the top 3 winners Vincent, Juneci and Mac who went home with cash winnings and a Samsung SIII each. Here's some pics from yesterday!

Movie Review: Taken 2

Taken 2 starts with a funeral scene of the human traffickers that Mills killed in France. We are brought to Istanbul where Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) holidays with his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) and his ex-wife Lennie (Famke Janssen) after his assignment. The holidays is not exactly a holiday when Mills realised that he is being followed.

Mangosteen Tells No Lies

On my previous trip to Penang (read my trip snippits here), I gave in to my durian cravings. And it is during this time at the New World Park that I learnt an amazing fact. Apparently the fruit mangosteen tells no lies. Certainly the fruit does not speak so how does it speak no lie?

If you look at the mangosteen, then you will see at the bottom a set of raised ridges or bumps that looks like a wheel like arrangement. 
These ridges apparently corresponds with the numbers of pulps or correctly known as arils inside the mangosteen! I seriously thought that this was a joke told to us by the tour guide. As it turned out, after numerous fruits that we opened and a bit of googling online, it is indeed a fact that the mangosteen tells no lies:D 
And since we're on the truthful fruit mangosteen, I might as well mention that this fruit is a very nutritious fruit. Needless to say, it is yummy too. This fruit is proven to be rich in antioxidants and vitamins, so its certainly no harm eating them when they are in season. Lucky us in Malaysia, we pretty much have them almost all year long and we do not have to resort to canned ones:D
Not sure how true it is, but many believe that the mangosteen is also cooling. That pretty much explains why certain fruit stalls offer complimentary mangosteens when you purchase or eat durians at their place.
The stall outside New World Park in Swatow Lane, Penang is a rather good spot to visit for Penang hawker food offerings. Our recent trip has been too short to cover the food here, but we at least had our durian fix within the city without going all the way to Balik Pulau.
There were a few grades and we had quite a bit of the day's selections.
Rather difficult to resist such gorgeous yellow and creamy fruit:D
And of course helped ourselves to the mangosteens available to cool down:D But seriously, mangosteen does clean your palates to an extend after consuming durians though I must say, the durian scent pretty much lingered in our mouth:P

Ketika melawat Pulau Pinang beberapa minggu yang lalu (boleh baca ringkasan lawatan saya di sini) kita telah singgah di New world Park untuk makan durian. Disebabkan kami hanya ada 6 jam di Pulau Pinang, memanglah tidak berbaloi kalau kita menghabiskan masa untuk makan durian di Balik Pulau.

Di New World Park, saya buat kali pertama mendengar "buah manggis tidak menipu". Eh... bagaimana buah manggis tidak menipu padahalnya ia tidak boleh bercakap?

Lihatlah buah manggis dan awak akan nampak di bawah buah adalah satu bentuk yang menyerupai roda. Jika anda mengiranya lalu membuka buah manggis, dengan pasti sekali ulasan dalam manggis adalah sama kuantiti dengan "roda" di bawa buah manggis. Awalnya, saya ingat ianya satu gurau atau kebetulan. Namun selepas membuka beberapa biji manggis, memang betullah yang dikatakan itu. Bila saya mencari dalam google, memang benar juga kata Wikipedia.

Buah manggis memang sedap dan berkhasiat. Kita yang duduk di malasia sungguh bertuah kerana boleh makan buah ini hampir sepanjang tahun. Manggis mengandungi banyak anti oksidan dan vitamin.

Tidak pasti sama ada buah manggis dapat menyejukkan badan kita atau tidak. Tetapi memang satu kebiasaan melihat gerai yang menjual durian juga turut menjual manggis. Dan sesetengah gerai juga menawarkan manggis percuma kepada pelanggan mereka seperti gerai durian yang kita singgah di New World Park yang terletak di Swatow Lane.

Enak sekali duriannya dan paling menarik ialah saya telah belajar fakta baru tentang buah manggis. Terima kasih kepada pihak MAS dan PayPal yang menganjurkan lawatan ke Pulau Pinang.

Tropical Smoothie

Here's the Tropical Smoothie that I mentioned in my previous post. Its a wholesome and delightful smoothie that is perfect for breakfast or a snack that you can easily make at home. Some may argue that one is better off eating the fruits on its own. However, that can get boring, so here's a smoothie to the rescue so that we all have our daily fruits intake. 


• 2 Zespri® Green Kiwifruit peeled and halved
• ½ ripe banana
• ½ cup cubed honeydew melon
• ½ cup apple juice
• 100g fat free plain yoghurt

• Place all ingredients in blender or food processor.
• Blend all ingredients until smooth.
• Adjust consistency with apple juice.
• Serve cold.

Inilah Tropical Smoothie yang saya nyatakan dalam blog post saya yang lalu. Smoothie ini sungguh enak dan berkhasiat. Ada juga yang tertanya mengapa nak dibuat smoothie padal buah-buahan boleh dimkan begitu sahaja. Jawapannya ialah, agak bosan jika dimakan begitu sahaja setiap kali. Smoothie adalah satu cara untuk menghidangkan buah-buahan supaya kita boleh makan jumlah buah-buahan yang disyorkan.i.

• 2 Zespri ® Green Kiwi yang dikupas dan dipotong separuh
• ½ pisang masak
• ½ cawan tembikai susu 
• ½ cawan jus epal
• 100g lemak bebas yogurt asli

• Letakkan semua bahan ke dalam pengisar makanan.
• Kisar semua bahan sehingga sebati.
• Konsisten smoothie boleh dilaraskan dengan jus epal.
• Hidangkan sejuk.

Zespri® Kiwifruits

The "furry" brown fruit is definitely one of my fave fruits. And I am glad that I attended a cooking workshop organized by Zespri® Kiwifruit. It wasn't just learning about the fruit or even making dessert with the kiwi but amazingly, kiwi goes very well with savoury dishes too! Amazing goodness in one lil fruit.
Some kiwi facts for you:
• Kiwis are rich in vitamin C. While everyone always think of oranges for vitamin C they should think kiwifruit. In one serving of a kiwi (150g), you can get over 150% of the amount recommended for your daily intake (RDA) of Vitamin C
• Kiwi consistently rank at the top of fruit in nutrition density models which tell us exactly how nutritious food are. That means you get more vitamins and minerals per gram, and per calorie, of kiwifruit than most other fruit.
• Kiwi is power packed with fibre. It is a good alternative to papaya (especially people like me who cannot take papaya).
• Kiwi is very high in Vitamin E. Its quite unusual for a low fat food, let alone fruit to be a good source of vitamin E (well known for its heart health and antioxidant properties) - but kiwifruit is a great low fat natural source of vitamin E
• Kiwi has about the same levels as bananas but only half the calories - making kiwifruit an excellent low sodium, increased potassium source - potentially beneficial in the maintenance of blood pressure and for heart health.
• Eating just two kiwifruit a day has been proven to reduce the amount of oxidative damage to your cells and improve the repair of damaged DNA caused by oxidative stress. This has been shown in human studies both in New Zealand and Europe.
• Kiwis are really great to relieve that bloated and blocked feeling. It is prescribed as a natural digestive aid which is due to the unique combination of fibre and other components in kiwifruit. 
Zespri® Kiwifruit is available in gold (sweeter) and the slightly tangier green.

And to make kids (and adults) eat fruits, a kiwi cupcake is a deliciously good idea.
Chef Rohani Jelani leads us in our workshop held at Bayan Indah. We do not head straight into the kitchen to cook. Chef Rohani teaches us the basics that any person who cooks needs to know. And for me, these were precious tips.
Presentation is important for any dish. And as such we learn just how easy it is to cut a kiwi beyond the regular halves that we often do. Cutting with a sharp knive to make continuous V all around the fruit and a twist...
and we have such pretty presentations! 
Seriously easy because even clumsy me managed to do it too!  
Chef Rohani too demonstrated the ease of perfectly julienned vegies using only a sharp knife. 
The workshop taught us simple and yummy dishes that we could cook with kiwi. Interestingly, I would not have thought of using kiwi but well Chef Rohani thought them all out and they are indeed very delicious. I was in group 3 together with Sonia, Swee San and Veron. Pretty much we all worked together to whip out our lunch:D

Baru-baru ini saya menghadiri workshop memasak yang dianjurkan Zespri® Kiwifruit. Buah kiwi memang salah satu buah kesukaan saya dan biasanya saya tahu ia dimakan begitu sahaja ataupun sebagai pencuci mulut. Namum, Zespri® Kiwifruit bersama Chef Rohani Jelani telah mengajar kita yang buah kiwi ini boleh digunakan oleh juga digunakan untuk memasak kari! 

Dalam workshop ini, kita juga dimaklumkan mengenai beberapa fakta mengenai buah kiwi:
• Ianya sangat kaya dengan Vitamin C. Sebiji buah kiwi (150g) mengandungi lebih 150% daripada jumlah yang disyorkan untuk pengambilan harian anda (RDA) Vitamin C!
• Kiwi adalah padat dengan khasiat vitamin dan mineral setiap gram berbanding dengan kebanyakan buah-buahan lain termasuk limau dan epal.
• Kiwi adalah penuh dengan serat. Ia adalah alternatif yang baik untuk betik (terutama orang-orang seperti saya yang tidak boleh makan betik).
• Kiwi adalah sangat tinggi dalam Vitamin E. Ini agak luar biasa kerana kandungan Vitamin E biasanya tinggi hanya dalam makanan yang berlemak. Vitamin E adalah mustahak untuk kesihatan jantung dan sebagai satu anti oksidan.
• Ia terbukti dengan pe
makanan dua biji buah kiwi sehari, anda boleh memperbaiki membaiki DNA yang rosak yang disebabkan oleh oxidative stress. Ini terbukti dalam kajian manusia di New Zealand dan Eropah.
• Buah kiwi juga boleh melegakan perasaan kembung. Ia disyorkan untuk membantu pencernaan kerana kombinasi serat dan komponen lain-lain buah ini.

Terdapat 2 jenis Zespri® Kiwifruit. Zespri® Kiwifruit emas adalah lebih manis berbanding dengan Zespri® Kiwifruit hijau. Kedua-dua buah ini rasanya unik sekali dan boleh digunakan sebagai pencuci mulut dan juga untuk dimasak. 

Sementara menanti kelas untuk bermula, kami dihidangkan Tropical Smoothie yan sungguh enak dan berkhasiat. Blog yang seterusnya akan mengandungi resipi smoothie ini. Kami juga dihidangankan Cupcake kiwi yang sungguh enak. Cupcake buah kiwi ini adalah satu resipe yang bagus terutamanya untuk mereka yang tidak suka makan buah-buahan.

Dalam workshop memasak tersebut, kami tidak sahaja belajar masak dengan kiwi. Chef Rohani turut mengajar kita memotong buah kiwi dan sayuran untuk dijadikan hiasan. Kita dibahagikan kepada beberpa kumpulan. Kumpulan saya terdiri dari SoniaSwee San dan Veron. Hidangan yang kita belajar memasak adalah untuk hidangan makan tengahari kita. Sungguh hands on dan kita sememangnya berkerja sama supaya boleh makan secepat yang mungkin.

Saya sungguh terkagum dengan penggunaan buah kiwi. Ianya boleh digunakan untuk mengganti terung dan tomato untuk masakan Nyonya Style Asam Fish Curry with Zespri® Kiwifruit Wedges! Ia juga sesuai untuk dijadikan salad ala Thai seperti Spicy Zespri® Kiwifruit, Glass Noodle and Chicken Salad. 

Buah kiwi juga sesuai dijadikan jem Natural Zespri® Kiwifruit Jam yang boleh dimakan dengan roti ataupun biskut Cream Crackers. Jem yang dimasak juga boleh digunakan untuk membuat pencuci mulut Zespri® Kiwifruit Pastries with Yogurt Cream.

Ouch! That Familiar Pinching Pain

Its mid week and that familiar pinching pain is back in my shoulders blades and neck returns. Its the mid week stress settling in. My cure? Head down to the hair salon for a hair wash and my shampoo girl does the best job of relieving those pressure nodes. However there are some days that a trip to the salon is sheer impossible:( 

Getting the hubster to give me a neck and shoulder massage is perhaps an option. But the poor boy is just as exhausted as I am. So its self service massage:D Much as I love mixing my own essential oil to give myself a lil rub, I actually hate the after oily feel especially when I am at work. 

Recently I received some Tiger Balm Neck and Shoulder Rub. In a glance this "potion" looks promising. After all, this is the Tiger Balm brand that I grew up using for insect bites and headaches. 
Squeezed a little onto my fingers and proceeded to give my neck and shoulder blades a slight rub. The smell was rather pleasant with a slight hint of lavender to calm the senses. No after oily feel. I like it! It certainly helped with my lil massage and having some cream certainly works better than direct skin massage.

The 50g flat tube packaging is a good idea. I can easily pack it into my lil pouch of lipsticks, perfume and assorted knick knacks that I carry in my handbag:D

2 cents of tips from yours truly:
PS: Sleeping immediately after a massage with the Tiger Balm Neck and Shoulder Boost gives me better sleep. I supposed its because I am more relaxed and coupled with nice warm fuzzy feel that relieves the aches.
PS 2: After a massage with the Tiger Balm Neck and Shoulder it is a good idea to take have a little stretching session of a few seconds to maximise the mini massage. For me, its almost like having a mini Thai massage:D
PS 3: Take break from your computer every hour. Lil stretches or even a walk to the toilet or the pantry for a drink is good.
PS 4: Correct your posture. No slouchinglah!
