Gin Appreciation and MIGF @ QBA Westin Kuala Lumpur

Gin appreciation followed by dinner and wine with good company. Any complains? Not me! And that was precisely how a Wednesday evening went.
A welcome drink of Caorunn Gin Tonic with a slice of apple. Absolutely refreshing.
The evening moves on and we run through a few more Caorunn cocktails. Each equally lovely and I will be posting up the recipes for the said cocktails.
What is a gin appreciation session without knowing more about the gin itself? We savour Caorunn neat to get a better taste of its flavours. Drunk on its own, Caorunn gin is crisp and dry. It is slightly spicy and has a beautiful fresh fruity aroma. The secret to its smoothness lies in its distillation process. Hop by www.caorunngin.com for more information on Caorunn gin.
Pretty canapes for finger food as we mingle and sip our gins.
Cigars anyone?
The hubster loving his cigar moments, an appreciation that he picked up when we visited Bali
7 years back.
And I love my apples...
Its dinner time after close to 3 hours of gin...Dinner is of course nothing less than Qba's MIGF showcase.
Addictively good bread while waiting for dinner to be served. A wee late for dinner but it is so good that Mei and I pretty much finished this loaf on our own while the boys sneaked off for more gin.
Appetizer is a composition of tapas. Master Kobe oyster blade roll, pico de gallo; grilled chicken St Antonia, tomato relish; basil-marinated tuna, melon and goat cheese paired with Codorniu Clasico Brut NV. A beautiful medley that certainly a beauty to look at. The Master Kobe Oyster Blade pretty much melted in our mouth and was quite an explosion of juices! The star of this tapas was definitely the basil marinated tuna , melon and feta cheese. It was glorious explosion of flavour and textures and textures - and I'll like to replicate this for my next salad meal at home!
Codorniu Clasico Brut NV is crisp and fruity.
A Taste of Starters in Q Minor: Smoked Salmon Parcel, Habenero Chive Aioli; Cuban Beef Empanada, Chilean Pebre and Brie Croqueta paired with Torres Gran Vina Sol 2010. The beef empanada is quite filling and its best eaten with the Chilean salsa. My fave of this platter would have to be the Brie Croqueta
Torres Gran Vina Sol 2010 is perhaps my fave wine for the night. Full bodied with a fresh blossoms note made this a perfect pair with red meats and even the salmon.
I must say that the soups were a pretty sight to behold. The Classical Arrangement of Qba Soups: Mexican Tomato with Fried Tortilla, Spiced Pumpkin with Lobster Brandade and Peruvian Chowder of Black Cod and Prawns
The Mexican Tomato soup was definite fave for the hubster and I. Tangy and flavourful...I would have loved to have another gorgeous bowl of this.

Always a fan of anything with pumpkins, I inherited the hubster's share of Spiced Pumpkin with Lobster Brandade.

Peruvian Chowder of Black Cod and Prawns. The broth felt a tad light for me but the Black Cod and prawns was really fresh and added depth to this soup. Perhaps a dash of pepper and alt would have made it more complete?
Say hello to this playful platter of Classical Arrangement of Qba Soups
For the main course, choose either the Symphony of Seafood or the Concerto of Beef. We opted for both to have a better idea of the whole MIGF meal.
The Concerto of Beef: Braised Beef Cheek, Wild Mushroom Confit, Beef Jus; Grilled Australian Angus Beef Ribeye, Braised Shallots, Cabrales Cheese Sauce and Master Kobe Sirlion, Tomato and Goat Cheese Cannelloni, Red Pepper Oil. One can't fault meat. Just remember to inform them of your meat doneness preference.
Master Kobe Sirlion, Tomato and Goat Cheese Cannelloni, Red Pepper Oil was my fave. The picture says it all...
Grilled Australian Angus Beef Ribeye with Braised Shallots and Cabrales Cheese Sauce is perfect for those who love sauces with their meat.
The hubster's all time fave of Braised Beef Cheek, Wild Mushroom Confit, Beef Jus which he deems a comfort food.
Marques de Murrieta Reserva 2006, Marques de Riscal reserva Tempranillo 2005 and Chivite Coleccion 125 reserva 2005
The Symphony of Seafood: Ocean trout Veracruz-style, capers, bell pepper and onion; Crispy cod finger, roasted tomato, rocket lettuce; Cajun marinated tiger prawn and seared scallop, romesco sauce. I must admit that the seafood looks more colourful than the concerto of beef. And because it was colourful, I started with the seafood first while the hubster started with the beef.
Cajun marinated tiger prawn and seared scallop is superb with the romesco sauce.
Crispy cod finger, roasted tomato, rocket lettuce was my fave. I loved the fact that the skin was crispy and not oily while the flesh remains juicy and tender.
Ocean trout Veracruz-style, capers, bell pepper and onion.
Jean Leon Chardonnay, Vinya Gigi 2008, Vina Errazuriz Estate Chardonnay 2010 and Matetic Corrarillo Chardonnay 2009.
Complete the meal Qba’s Dessert Tasting Plate: Argentinean Crepe, Churros with Hot Chocolate, Coconut Creme Caramel dan Caramel Ice Cream. I am not a coconut fan but I must admit that the coconut creme caramel and caramel ice cream were delightfully good and provided a good finish to our very carnivorous dinner.
Left to right? Or Right to left? I started from right to left so that the ice cream does not melt any further.

Churros with Hot Chocolate was awesomely yummy. Do not waste the chocolate, drink it all up!
Chivite Vendimia Tardia Blancho Cosecha 2006 paired well with our desserts with its sweet fruity goodness.
Digestive is supposed to be GlenGrant whisky. But we skipped since the 4 of us definitely had a bit to much to drink by then:P
