Go Crabby @ Zuan Yuan

A tribute to the regular crabs is due now when everyone is busy talking about the seasonal hairy crabs (also known as mitten crabs) and that also means that stock os probably not regular especially when its almost the end of the season. Zuan Yuan pays tribute to the "regular" crabs instead for the month of November. Rest assured that this legendary pork free restaurant is serving up halal crabs.

3 types of crabs and 7 types of preparations awaits you at Zuan Yuan. Flower Crab is prices at RM12 per 100g while the mud crab and roe crab is at RM12 per 100g. Rather good prices I must say. And if you do not see the preparation that you like, then you can request kitchen to prepare it to your preferred flavour and they will try to accomodate where possible. Though I will say with 7 types of preparations including steamed, sautéed, braised, wok fried and stir fried, you are quite spoilt for (quality) choice.

Our meal kicked off with Dumpling with Szechuan Sauce RM16. Piquant and tasty it was a perfect appetizer to whet our appetites.
Mummy says eat your vegetables. And eating our vegetables to please mummy isn't hard especially when its a plate of Sauteed Eggplant with Fried Garlic, Dried Shrimp and Basil RM25. Sweet and juicy in its own way with a refreshing basil touch to it. Something new to me...and I loved it!
And now...let's talk crabs. After all this is the Go Crabby post!
Looking a little like your regular chili crabs but its far from that. Sauteed Crab with Dried Shrimp, Lemon Grass and Curry Leaves in Spicy Brown Sauce. For this preparation, we had the roe crab @ RM12 per 100g. The lemon grass and curry leaves gave this a lovely zing. A little spicy though I would have preferred it spicier...something that is a matter of preference that you can inform the kitchen at the point of placing your order.
Steamed Crab with Superior Stock and Egg White is a must try. The humble flower crab @ RM10 per 100g is often shunned by many. But seriously, this little fella with not the most flesh is actually very sweet and works well is such simple preparations. A little bit of hard work to get to the meat but its very worth it.
Everyone loves the salted egg yolk and this Sauteed Crab with Salted Egg Yolk, Chilli Padi and Spring Onion is one sinful crab preparation that shouts "Eat Me Now"! Savoury and creamy egg yolk enhanced with butter, spring onion and a superior stock adds character to the regular salted egg preparation which can be quite overpowering for some. The mud crab with its juicy denser meat certainly fits this preparation well.
The highlight preparation that we felt was the most unique and certainly hit an almost perfect 10 for flavour is the Wok Fried Crab with Cheese and Butter in Superior Stock. Again its the mud crab that's chosen for this preparation. Rich but not overwhelming even though we're talking butter and cheese with a simple common garlic. It so good that one will not be scorned for wiping the plate clean:D

Another 3 preparations that you can choose from are:
• Other crab dishes in the menu include Braised Crabs with XO Sauce and Glass Noodle
And in case you think that XO sauce is the XO cognac...then you're wrong. In Hong Kong, XO is merely a type of spicy seafood sauce. SO its perfectly alcohol free!
• Wok Fried Crab “Kim Hing” Style
• Stir Fried Crab with Black Pepper Dressing

A crabby meal (actually all meals) must end with a dessert and witha  heavy meal, it better end with  something refreshing. Say hello to Chilled Lemon Grass Jelly with Dragon Fruit RM10 which is part of Zuan Yuan's new menu.
Refreshing, tasty and definitely not overly sweet!

Go Crabby @ Zuan Yuan happens all through the month of November.
