MRCA Charity Run 2014 - Review

MRCA Charity Run 2014, running, One City Mall, Koufu Trendy,
Its been quite a few Sundays filled with official runs rather than my usual training. Fun in a way except for strange reason, I found myself running another 10km run which isn't quite my idea of an ideal run because I am terrible at short distances which requires greater speed. Anyhow, The MRCA Charity Run 2014 was definitely a good and fun run in its own manner filled with old and young.

Collection of race kit on the eve on the race at One City Mall gave me a rough indication of the race route. It was going to be flat and literally almost iron board flat with a few slight elevations. Hmmmm I literally was rolling my eyes at the thoughts of a flat route during our late lunch at Koufu Trendy but the hubster was like a wise old man and 'advised' that I should embrace the challenge of a flat route. In embracing new challenges then I can only improve my running technic, timings etc. Yeah yeah...whatever...its me running not him!

Got to the race site at 6am as duly advised in our race kit. Parking was ample and good. I opted to sit in One City Mall anticipating that the warm up session indoor led by the instructors from the gym will be good. Ooops..they were playing music romantic from the 80s. Aiks...it was literally putting me to sleep and I didn't have my iPod with me for my own set of playlist - been trying to run without music on my runs and thought I start with short 10km runs.
MRCA Charity Run 2014, running, One City Mall, Koufu Trendy,

Messaged the bunch of runners in our whatsapp group and Nick mentioned he was "hiding in one of the bushes" outdoor where the music was my kind of running songs. Aaarrgh,,,I should have messaged them earlier. Got out, met Nick and wanted to do a bit of warm up but I got lazy. Ended up chatting with fellow runners and did my toilet inspection before we were flagged off.

It was quite a crowd and being a fun run, as expected there will be some who will be walking hand in hand or those who sprinted off at the start of the race only to walk within the first few kilometres. Made a note that I should learn to move on to the front of the race line in future if I want to avoid running zig zag to overtake the walkers or lane hoggers...hopefully I remember that in future.
MRCA Charity Run 2014, running, One City Mall, Koufu Trendy,
The weather was cool at the start though it was a tad sunny. Good traffic control in general and I had a good time picking up my pace since it was a flat route. Did a fair bit of over cutting the runners. Took a cup of water at the first water station at KM4. Well organised with ready filled cups and plenty of dustbins for people to throw their cups etc.

Had a near miss of tripping as I approached the next water station at KM6. Rehydrated and continued my run looking out for fellow pals who were running. Nick, Claudia and KK were doing well and ahead of me at the U Turns. No issues...I was still maintaining my pace... tad faster than I bargained for and enjoying the scenery and greeting the volunteers on duty.

Yeah doing some traffic duties as some runners were totally unaware of their surroundings. Please if you choose to run with music on, you still need to be aware of the coming traffic behind you. There had been a few incidences that fellow runners had to tap and grab a few of the totally blurred out by music runners and walkers from the road. It wasn't a full road closure on certain stretch so please be mindful when running. Always also follow what the route marshalls tell you to do. Stop running on the so called inner line of the road just because you want to run less because that inner line may just be where the traffic is coming from!

A tad of human traffic at the last water station because we merged with the 5km. Some were walking towards us, some were in the same direction. Heavy human traffic left me with no choice but to run along the cones but paying attention to possible vehicle traffic behind me.  Cleared the last corner and it was a nice quickened pace as I see One City Mall becoming closer and closer with every stride. Aiks...sorry if I yelled "runner coming through" at the last 50 metres as I reached the finish line. Its under 10km...but I am determined to do my best even at 9.38km.

Done and dusted. The MRCA Charity Run 2014 10km...or rather 9.38km at my personal best of 54.33 at 8th placing. Thirsty and hungry, I was glad to catch up with Nick for coffee and some food that the organisers had arranged. Good stuff including ice cream, organic crackers etc.  Also good to catch up with KK and Claudia. Congras Claudia on your 5th placing!

Taman desa, Foodie Trail, asam laksa, Penang, loh bak, Hokkien Mee,
2 weeks down the lane and I am still craving spicy food. So the hubster suggested that we check out a relatively new eatery The Hawker Street in our neighbourhood. Its a rainy evening and I seriously don't fancy driving too far from home.

Christmas with Bisou Bake Shop

Bisou Bake Shop, Foodie Trail, Christmas, Christmas gift idea,
I love Christmas! Its my favourite time of the year when it comes to cakes even though I am not much of a sweet tooth person. Maybe its the use of the lovely spices? Going rustic gold, the folks at Bisou Bake Shop have everything delicious for Christmas. Whether its for yourself or as gifts, I love the selection that they have prepared for Chrismas 2014.

Time to Sleep!

#MYDunlopilloMoments, sleep, trouble sleeping, Dunlopillo, contest,
How well do you sleep? How well does your loved one sleep? If your answer is "not too good" then you might want to look into your sleeping habits and also your sleeping space including your bedding e.g. pillows and mattress. The folks at Dunlopillo believes that a mattress is more than an object necessary for sleep. In the comfort of your mattress, you are free to experience and embrace your thoughts and emotions. This simply translates to a more rested you (or your partner) and it all leads to better health, wellness and even relationships since a tired person is more likely to be snappy and short fused.

Family Christmas Affair

Christmas is definitely a fun time for both old and young. Lots of pressies. Lots of good food and definitely lots of love. Celebrations go on for almost a month rather than the 12 days of Christmas like a popular Christmas song says. And if one is tired of hosting celebrations at home, taking it to restaurants is a good idea if you hate the after party cleaning up!

running, Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2014, #SCMS2014, Singapore, travel, marathon, airasia, 3Sixty,
SCMS2014 is my second race in Singapore this year. Much has been shared online by different runners from different categories. With my own experience of running the full marathon this year, I conclude that hiccups happens in every race and with that I am making the decision to return to Singapore next year for SCMS2015.

Innisfree Review

I Am A Girl, innisfree, korea, review, skincare, sunway pyramid,
Skincare is more than just diligently cleaning our skin and spattering some lotions and potions. What goes into the products is equally important. For those who love mild and natural products, its a jump for joy as Korea’s famous skincare innisfree makes its way to our shores with its first store in Sunway Pyramid Mall.

Christmas with Delifrance

Delifrance, Foodie Trail, Christmas, Christmas gift idea,
My early memories of Delifrance is during my college days in the early 90s where Delifrance in Lot 10 was my favourite spot to indulge in people watching while I enjoyed my tuna sandwich with a cup of cappuccino and to end my meal with a fruit tart. 20 years down the lane, Delifrance is still in town and with more outlets too. The Christmas offerings at Delifrance is an interesting take with them retaining some of their best sellers and adding on some new stuff as well.

Bari Uma Ramen

Bari Uma Ramen, Japanese, Foodie Trail, Jaya Shopping Centre, chashu
I am not complaining that we have more Japanese goodness in town. Bari Uma's authenticity speaks for itself because one is bound to be eating in the company of many Japanese when one is dining there.

Vintage Tea Party at Gobo Chit Chat

Traders Hotel, Foodie Trail, Christmas
Traders Hotel takes up a vintage makeover for the festive Christmas celebrations until 1st January 2015. Starting from the lobby all the way to its eateries, there is a consistent vintage theme. On a recent visit, it was a Vintage Tea Party at Gobo Chit Chat with some pals. Very tai-tai style especially when its on a Sunday from 12noon to 4pm:P

A good meal with a bunch of friends or with the whole family is either a BBQ or steamboat. On a recent makan get together with some pals, we opted for bar-B-Q Plaza. Coincidentally they were also having a FREE refill promotion that makes dining a good deal if you guys are into a serious makanthon while catching up with each other.

Great Eastern Women's Run 2014 - My Experience

Great Eastern Women's Run 2014, #GEWR2014, running, Singapore, AirAsia, 3Sixty
Great Eastern Women's Run 2014 has been a unique experience for me. Its not every day or every race that one gets to run with 15,500 women. A purist race and its all for a good reason of empowering women.

For those who followed #GEWR2014 on the different social media scenes, you would have noted that many made the decision to take part in the run for different reasons. Some wanted to stay fit. Some wanted to lose weight. Some wanted to challenge themselves physically. Whatever the reasons were, I am sure that all the women's who participated had fun and gained positive experience for themselves including myself.

And for the first Sunday of the 2015, do consider signing up for the MPIB Run 2015 which flags off on the first Sunday of the year - Sunday 4th January 2015. This run is definitely going to be a fun session for both old and young plus you get to kick off the brand new year on a healthy note.

Bites Cafe @ Lake Fields

I admit that I get grouchy when I am hungry. Strangely when I walked into Bites Cafe @ Lakefields, my mood changed for the better immediately even though I have yet to have anything to eat or drink after my 30km morning run. There was something cheery about the place coupled with the happy faces of the diners there. Soon I realised, its the decor, the food and the team working at Bites Cafe that make it a delightful visit each and every time.

Recipe: Kiwifruit Sandwiches

Sandwiches are easy to whip out. And instead of the usual spreads and fillings, add a refreshing touch to your sandwich. A lovely touch would be kiwifruit. The green kiwifruits are lovely because its a nice sweet and tangy mix. If you choose a riper green kiwifruit then its nice and sweet touch to your savoury sandwich.

Viva El Sabor @ Eccucino

Think Spanish and its everything vibrant and colourful. Viva El Sabor and its a delicious Spanish spread at Eccucino. Food is real, unpretentious and makes the best of fresh ingredients and flavoured with delightful spices and herbs. Culinary guest Chef Jordi Gimeno teams up with Chef de cuisine Jason Manson to present The Many Flavours of Spain extravaganza. Delightful bites after bites from tapas to mains and desserts.

Recipe: Cheddar Omelette Kiwifruit Salad

I like whipping out quick and clean bites with minimum washing. Actually dish with more than 10 ingredients does freak me out. So the cheddar omelette with kiwifruit salad is perhaps one of the easiest and more fulfilling quickie meals that I do whip out quite often within 5 minutes.

SCMS 2014: Route updates & Haile Gebrselassie

SCMS 2014 is tipped to get even better and more exciting. The routes are revised to imrpove every runners running experience. The new routes will reduce congestion at the merging point of various categories.

The new routes are as follows:
10km
Half Marathon
Full marathon
• At approximately 18km along the Half Marathon route, runners will get off the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) via the exit ramp leading to Maxwell Road.  They will then make their way through the Central Business District via Robinson Road - Collyer Quay – Anderson Bridge, to finish at the Padang. This revised running route effectively separates the Half Marathon participants (more than 12,000 runners) from the Marathon and 10km runners, thereby significantly reducing the 3km congestion traditionally experienced in previous years.
• This also enables the Marathon and 10km participants to enjoy a clearer path along the Republic Boulevard - Raffles Ave – Esplanade Drive stretch – until the final 500m, where the runners of all three distance categories will merge just before Anderson Bridge, for their final journey to the finish line.
• Similar to previous editions, all categories will have wave starts to minimise crowding within the first few kilometres.
• Marathon participants will also be happy to note that with the revised route, they will have the opportunity to run very close to and take in the magnificent sights around the Sports Hub.
• Registrations remain open for all categories until midnight on 31 October 2014. Late entries will still be accepted after this date but participants will pay a $20 late fee and will not receive a personalised race bib. For all SCMS 2014 registration details please visit www.marathonsingapore.com.

The 10km runners will be able to run with Haile Gebrselassie, the man widely regarded as the greatest ever long distance runner.  Haile will be participating in this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore and lining up alongside thousands of runners in the 10km race category. There are close to 13,000 participants have already signed up for the 10km and will now enjoy the amazing opportunity to run in the same race as the man who once covered the distance in a stunning 26mins 22secs! Gebrselassie will also host a number of training clinics while he is in town, with local runners set to benefit from the extensive knowledge of the man who set an astonishing 27 world records throughout his illustrious career. The specific details of the clinics, as well as several other public appearances, will be announced by the event organisers in the coming weeks.

Cape Mentelle Degustation with Cameron Murphy @ Tanzini

A favourite name at home is Cape Mentelle. This probably stemmed from my fond memeories of the Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012 which I won in the last Cape Mentelle dinner last year at Neo Tamarind.  A recent degustation lunch at Tanzini deepens my joy with this affordable and delicious name for Cape Mentelle.

Happening until 5th December 2014, Cape Mentelle in collaboration with Tanzini will feature a pairing promotion comprising of a 4-course degustation menu for RM400++ for two persons and each course will be paired with a bottle of Cape Mentelle Chardonnay.  And if you like what you ahd, why not check out the rest of Cape Mentelle impressive portfolio?

The afternoon kicks off with us mingling and sipping a refreshing glass of Cape Mentelle 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. A lovely start I must say with our crazy hot spells. In our company we have Cameron Murphy who is the Estate Director of Cape Mentelle Vineyards. It was delightful hearing him sharing his knowledge of the vineyard and the wines.

Cape Mentelle 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is fruity and fresh. Light and crisp with an intense citrusy aroma, it also made a perfect pairing with our first dish of seared Hokkaido Scallops. Rather than being a pure 50% – 50% blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion variants with 5 to 10% of the Semilion being barrel fermented to enhanced flavours.

Next on our list is Cape Mentelle Carbenet Merlot 2012. I rediscovered my love for red wines after the previous Cape Mentelle pairing dinner and these days am making a request for more reds than whites.

Inspired by the fine reds of Bordeaux, this is a fine blend of 63% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% petit Verdot and 2% cabernet franc. The unmistaken nose of dark fruits. Medium bodied and velvety with a lovely lingering flavours of sweet currants. It was definitely the right match with the Free Range Chicken Roulade and Cured Smoked Duck. A pretty dish with a nice balance of textures and bite of chestnuts and pistachios.

Fish or red meat? I wanted both but with the choice being only one, I opted for the 28 days Aged Striploin because the body seemed to be craving for some iron. Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 was to be the buddy to my choice of main. Its an intense red with an equally intriguing characters of currant and cocoa. Medium bodied with lovely tannins and if one has to choose a bottle of red for the whole meal, this will be my choice!  And if you have a bottle or more at home, let it age a little more to be a prettier gem:D

I am a bit at a lost with the piece of meat. Its aged so its fair to be served medium rare. Unfortunately mine turned out to be a case of bordering medium. Picture is from a friendly neighbour who offered me her plate for picture purposes:D Its tasty nevertheless .

For those who prefer fish, there is the option of the Atlantic Black Cod that is paired with the Cape Mentelle Chardonnay 2012. Again, a kind media pal offered me a huge chunk of the delightful creamy piece of cod. The Chardonnay is definitely a brilliant bottle and I reckon most of us were actually drinking only this when we ended our meal. Bright, fruity with a happy nose of citrus, sweet pears and vanilla that definitely goes well with many folks especially the ladies.

Dessert is always fun. Dessert is always good and I am a firm believer that desserts must be present in every meal no matter how big or small or grand a meal is. The folks at Tanzini definitely did a brilliant job with the Praline Chocolate Mousse with Crunchy Croquantine Hazelnut Daquoise, Cherry Gel and Light Lemongrass Gelato. Perfectly paired again with Cape Mentelle Chardonnay 2012.

Love the above? Head on to Tanzini for the 4-course degustation meal priced at RM400++ for 2 persons which I feel is a good value for money. Both Cameron Murphy and Chef Eugene Lee did a good job with the menu and pairing. Hurry, hurry...this deal goes on till 5th December 2014.
