Great Eastern Women's Run 2014 - My Experience

Great Eastern Women's Run 2014 has been a unique experience for me. Its not every day or every race that one gets to run with 15,500 women. A purist race and its all for a good reason of empowering women.

For those who followed #GEWR2014 on the different social media scenes, you would have noted that many made the decision to take part in the run for different reasons. Some wanted to stay fit. Some wanted to lose weight. Some wanted to challenge themselves physically. Whatever the reasons were, I am sure that all the women's who participated had fun and gained positive experience for themselves including myself.

The #GEWR2014 excitement built up with run clinics and many newbies I believe were actually well prepared by the time the run took place on 9th November 2014. Many happy faces which pretty much meant they tackled the route and/or run well. Kudos on the run clinics. Although I have not attended them since I am based in Kuala Lumpur, undoubtedly they must have worked magic on the many new runners who I met after my run.

In my case, its been a good one from the moment that I touched down in Singapore. Flew in after work on Friday with AirAsia. The weather has been kinda wet but its been good with a cup of green tea and 3Sixty to entertain me throughout the flight.

Settled in nicely after dinner and I was really excited to see the goodies that were in my runner's entitlement. A lovely bag filled with my running vest and lots of others goodies including collagen samples, a water bottle and vouchers. Amazingly, the vest was a perfect fit. A far cry from the many races that I ended up with bigger than it should be vest even though I have opted for XS. Kudos to the organisers and Adidas! Must say that this is one vest that will be worn instead of being given away.

Making my way to The Float @ Marina Bay on Sunday morning was easy. The road closure signs were clear and made known to the public earlier on. Noted that many arrived early to warm up, take their pics etc. The layout of the entire area was as per their layout plan in the runners guide. Baggage deposit was all nice orderly before and after the race. I spent less that 5 minutes to deposit and retrieve my bag.

My run was to flag off at 530am. So I was in the start pan by 510am. It was drizzling unfortunately and I made a mistake of forgetting my disposable rain coat that I often bring for most runs especially during the rainy season. The long winded drizzle did nothing to dampen our spirits. Even though many of us in the pan did not know one another, it was all abuzz as we chatted and waited to be flagged off.

The route is brilliant. Generally flat to my dismay but it was scenic and made up for the boredom that normally hits me when I encounter long straight or flat routes. Good water stations and the volunteers definitely did a good job filling up the drinks quick and fast. Some even greeted us and urged those who looked exhausted to stay strong. Even though it was only 21km, I was surprised that bananas and gels were also distributed. In fact, over 480 cartons of bananas were distributed on the day itself!

The Run Pacers were also a good bunch who ran well within their timing. They weren't just running their own run and did well to encourage those who ran with them. Perhaps for the next #GEWR2014, the pacers for each timing could be split to 2 groups so that those who start off from the back of the pan do not have to chase after the pacers to make up for the starting gap.

Since it rained quite a bit since Saturday night, the route was wet but it kept the temperatures comfortable through out the run for me. It was good that the recurring cramps that I was getting the previous 2 days before #GEWR2014 did not happen during the run though when I finished, the glutes threatened to seize up. Resorted to some quick stretches with the Tiger Balm that was being handed out to runners in the Runners Welfare Area.

Its an all women's event and a powder room was definitely a must! The folks at Body Shop sponsored the powder room and it was definitely a popular spot for us as we freshened up after our run.

Runners' post run entitlements were definitely good. The usual works of medals, banana, isotonic and finisher tee (21km only) were given out. What surprised me was the options of food available for everyone including Nando's, smoothies, apples, muffins, sausage rolls and lots more. Having a post run massage is also an amazing option. Though the wait was a tad long, its definitely worth the wait!

A good thing about walking around after a run is you walk off the lactic acid build up and you never know who you are going to meet. In my case, it was pure joy to bump into Pearl, my ex classmate from Kluang who I have not met for over 20 years!

Though I did not run my targeted time in #GEWR2014, I definitely enjoyed the run and have been wearing my finisher tee with pride because I did my best. Plus its a nice fit too!

#GEWR2014 has been a good run and I definitely am looking forward to running it again next year! For those who have not ran in a purist run, then this is one good women's only run that is highly recommended.
