I love the idea of exploring quiet gems in Kuala Lumpur city centre for a good meal after work. It's no surprise that after a crazy day at work, a nice and quiet sit down dinner is good for the soul.  A new dining gem for us these days will be Pampas Reserve Grill & Bar nestled in Bukit Ceylon. Surrounded by lush greenery away from the hustle and bustle of the city even though its merely 100m from Jalan Raja Chulan, it's the perfect spot for some quiet dining both lunch and dinner.

The drinks menu features a good list of wines. Of course there's also cocktails, juices etc to suit different fancies. A red wine for me and the hubster has his whisky sour.

Take your pick of alfresco dining or indoor sitting and enjoy a quiet meal with attentive service. Most importantly, food is good other than their extensive wine and drinks menu. The food menu is eclectic but its all fine without any rude shocks to the tastebuds or the wallet.

I have been craving for crab cakes of late and the Homemade Crab Cakes (RM23) were just the perfect remedy for my cravings. Deep fried might not be my favourite preparation for food but these delightful cutlets were just lightly coated and not oozing with oil like many other places. Compact and dense, these crab cakes are great for sharing before your main dishes arrive.

The word ‘hebi’ caught my eye. It means dried shrimps in our local Hokkien dialect and of course brings me much happy memories of my late grandma’s sambal hebi that I ate with bread, rice, noodles and anything savoury that I could lay my hands on.

At Pampas, the Spaghetti Sambal "Hebi" (RM32) is highly recommended if you want a Malaysian style pasta dish. Fret not because we are looking at a proper preparation of al dente spaghetti tossed with the familiar and comforting goodness of spicy shrimp paste, prawns and french beans. In fact, this dish was inspired by one of the Chef’s fond memories of his Penang childhood of sambal hebi with french beans!

A visit to Pampas is not complete unless one tries their Argentinian styled steaks.  The cuts and styles are not too varied so as to keep things simple but you are guaranteed of a good steak. The hubster opted for the CAAB Black Angus Beef Sirloin 250gram (RM88). His choice of medium rare came the way he wanted it.  Delicious, juicy the way a properly prepared steak should be without the need to slather it with the sauce. Served with sauteed broccoli, lyonnaise potatoes and chimichurri sauce on the side, he pretty much wiped the plate clean.

My choice was the Grass Fed Grilled Beef Tenderloin 250gram (RM68). A good deal and definitely left me satisfied with a juicy cut of meat with a hint of salt and pepper. Served with sauteed haricot vert, mash potatoes and green peppercorn sauce on the side. One must take note that mash potatoes at Pampas are highly recommended. It's definitely one of the smoothest and creamiest mash that I have had for the longest time.

Dessert was worth the 15 minutes wait. Warm Dark Chocolate Granache (RM18) for a sweet and comforting end to dinner. The skies have turned dark and it was lovely watching the flickering candles and yellow lights outside Pampas while we waited for our dessert. While plating seemed a little cold or distant for my personal liking but the taste of it makes up for everything else. It's a pretty little cake with a thick warm lava waiting to ease its way out gracefully. Nothing overly sweet or cloying and definitely good with a glass of wine, coffee or tea.

Both of us decided on coffee – a latte (RM10) for the hubster and an espresso (RM10) for me. Simple and a lovely end to our quiet dinner after work.
