Options for Japanese food gets better. A visit to Shabuton Tei unveils that this restaurant has much to offer from Shabu-shabu to ramen, bento sets, sushi, sashimi and more. What took my by surprise was the very thought kids meal, quality ingredients and also collagen shabu-shabu.

Collagen shabu-shabu and I am talking about a whole pot of pork collagen goodness that you might end up slurping up the whole pot before you leave the restaurant. RM58.20 for 2 pax and its pretty sufficient for average eaters. A whole platter of fresh ingredients including bean curd skin, chinese cabbage, sweet corn, tong oh, carrots, shitake mushrooms, shirataki, enoki, pumpkin, prawns, clams, yuzu fish paste, fish noodles, pork tsukune, pork belly, dried wakame, salmon fillet, gyoza and pork balls. Wholesome goodness and definitely an impressive fare compared to many other shabu-shabu eateries that carry too much processed food and balls for my personal liking.

rheda widenbruck pork. yeah imported pork!

Ramen does not have to be the regular soupy ramen that one often have. There's Salad Ramen RM23.20. Definitely a healthier and lighter meal compared to soupy ones. Springy and cold noodles with cucumber, sweet cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, bamboo, sliced chashu, runny Ajitama egg and house made special sauce with a refreshing zesty touch. Refreshing especially for hot days.

And if you fancy soupy ramen, there's plenty to choose from at Shabuton Tei. The ramen menu is constantly updated so it pays to visit them often! On our visit, we opted for something new on their menu - Miso Ramen RM27.90. Lighter than the regular tonkatsu but lighter and just as satisfying minus the cloying feeling.

Corn and butter adds more bite and flavour to the bowl of ramen. A clear favourite with many other diners who were happily slurping up their miso ramen.

And if you fancy bento sets like my hubster then there's a few to choose from. The hubster chose a popular favourite Black Pepper Salmon Set RM32.50. A thick slice of juicy salmon coated with delicious black pepper sauce.

If you fancy lighter bites then the Pan Fried Gyoza RM13.90 is highly recommended. One side fried while the other side is steamed and filled with juicy mince.

And if you love cucumber as much as I do, then you MUST order the Aburi Kyuri Salmon Mentai RM10.40. A healthy dish with crunchy Japanese cucumber topped with seared salmon flakes with cod roe mayo and drizzled with delicious house made citrus sauce.

However if you want some meat other than chashu, then the Buta Kakuni RM18.60 is a must. Order it with a bowl of rice if you want to make this dish a meal on its own. Stewed pork belly - flavourful, juicy and tender!

If you have kids with you or if you still like a kid (I feel like a kid most times), then there's the cute and honestly quite delicious Kid's Meal RM16.90. Ribena, pancakes and sushi for one complete meal.

Shabuton Tei celebrates their first anniversary (Happy birthday Shabuton Tei!) in the month of May with a few celebration items added to their menu. My fave would have to be the Japanese Water Cake RM8.10. Also known as mizu shinzen mochi because its made with water. Mochi like but lighter and less sweet, its served with gula melaka syrup and soybean powder. Eat it fast before it dissolves because its really water solidified!

A visit to Shabuton Tei is never boring. You get good food and you get to have a lesson or two about Japanese food. Check out their latest shinbun on the table which has different topics every month. During our last visit it was all about ramen!
