Toyota Vios 1.5G (AT) - Review

Same same but different.

Malaysians are obsessed with cars and I admit that I am also obsessed with cars. It comes as no surprise as we do spend a lot of time on the road. We practically eat, drive to work or even rest on the road! LOL but its true! With so many things that we literally do in our car, there are some features that we like and some new features that we hope will be added.

When Toyota introduced the latest Vios, most Malaysians are already quite familiar with the Vios model. This is also another reliable Toyota model that has helped boost Toyota’s reputationa nd brand in Malaysia. And now with the 3rd Generation of Vios hitting the roads, many might just ask as with any new car purchase “Is this new car a “sheep-in-new-clothings?“

The answer is NO in the general sense and YES as in the key DNAs that made Vios still so popular after a few generations. And let me run you through this baby!

Our ride over the week was the Toyota Vios 1.5G (AT) with the optional stylish aerokit. The first thing that struck me is the bigger and larger Vios compared to its its predecessors. The exterior lines are dynamic with bolder projector headlamps that emphasised its wide appearance. Certainly more attractive and keeping up with the current trends of cars.

There are some subtleties that most people won’t notice like its shaped top assisting air flow (catamaran-shaped roof). Our guess Toyota is responding to buyers’ fuel consciousness. The Vios model has already made its mark as one of best fuel efficient of its class, so it’s not surprising that the Vios is designed to be even more aerodynamic where possible.

Certainly looks bigger and more spacious!

Very sleek and the rear fog lights is also another brilliant safety feature in the new Toyota Vios.

That being the exterior excitement, the surprises for me came when I got into the interior of the new Vios. It does make the earlier generation Vios’s a tad bland.

New cool-looking gauge display and large easy for-the-eye Audio Visual Navigation system. The push-start button is easily accessed. A gentle touch on the button brewed the car into life. Like a nice cup of coffee, the Vios offers the occupants a perk that you just want to start moving and enjoy the ride.

There is much improved legroom both in the front and for the occupants in the rear. We were rather occupied talking about the the cool features and how reasonably quiet the Vios moves that we forgot that we took the car in the morning and literally zipped into the busy city.

The harsh traffic city was not a deterrent nor as stressful. City traffic jams is the norm being Klnites. This time around, we felt the in-cabin insulation of the Vios and for its class kept the occupants in the car cheerful. The video below sums up what we mean.

While Toyota did adjust some trimmings in the car to keep it light as light as possible to make it more fuel efficient, they didn’t remove any key DNA in my opinion the hallmark of several Toyota built cars of its class.

In-cabin comforts means driving is less strenuous to the driver. This Vios 1.5G (AT) model is trimmed with perforated combination leather seats which is designed for tropical climate countries like ours. This is excellent as many Malaysians do travel quite a bit especially during festive seasons where its been known to double or triple the usual travelling time.

I do love this vinyl trim in the Vios. It looks good and most importantly it spells easy maintenance i.e. cleaning. Let’s not forget the plus factor that this trimming is also meant to lighten the car for better fuel efficiency.

There is something quite alluring with the blue front foot illumination light. It does wonders especially when its dark. While one can switch on the cabin lights, an alternative is this illumination light that comes on when it senses the surrounding is dark. At least I know I am not stepping on my keys or a UFO:P

Peace of mind driving means safety for all every drive. The factory-equipped ‘Continental CC5’ tyres is reasonably excellent choice to help reduce road noise. (Conti CC5 is known for its silent tread pattern groove).

Peace of mind while driving includes knowing how you are doing your reverse parking. Ever hate the loud thud or “oops” when you have reversed into some else’s car or the wall? The new Vios has a reverse camera for your ease of mind and sanity.

The Vios is fitted with Toyota’s proven reliable VVT-I engine like many other Toyota popular models. What you get is fuel efficiency and powerful accelaration. The car is fun never mind that it's a family salon. Its zippy enough with reasonable handling and pick up.

For some, the lovely trunk space of 506 litres comes in handy for grocery shopping. We reckon its also perfect for road trips with the whole family and their baggages. One arrives at their destination comfortably and stay stylish throughout the vacation – I assume one has packed for all probabilities of a holiday dress code with those huge luggages!

All those selling points above its definitely no surprise why we see many generations of trusty Vios still on our Malaysian roads and why many swear by Toyota’s value for money and reliability over the years. Whatever your budget, there’s a Toyota Vios for you priced between RM74,749 to RM94,945 with the Toyota Vios 1.5G (AT) that we tried being RM90,113. Go grab your test drive at Toyota Showrooms and let us know your thoughts.
