There are no cats here but what you get is a cozy and stylish café with good coffee and hearty food made with love using only fresh and quality ingredients.

I personally love the cozy setup of Cat in the Box. Spacious with lots of natural light and in fact a few sunny spots, this is a perfect place to chill over good food and good company. There’s also old fashion board games like Monopoly to last you for a few hours of good fun over a few cups of coffee. And if you are in need of retail therapy, check out the hipster styled accessories and also gorgeous animal picture cards that are available for sale.

I love my flat whites. Took a sip of the Flat White RM10 at Cat in the Box and yes, it hits the sweet spot. It hits the familiar note that I have been looking for in my many flat white hunts. While there have been a few good cafes that brewed a satisfying Flat White, none have reminded me of the Australian memories I fondly kept in my heart. And on this visit, Cat in the Box specifically reminded me of Sydney and Melbourne’s flat white.
The secret – double ristretto! Personally it’s also the whole idea of knowing your beans, the double shots and the right temperature. Oh yes… for me this is the best Flat white ever on Malaysian soil.

Mocha and chocolate lovers must make it a point to visit Cat in the Box. The owners love their food here and take their craft very seriously. They use real ingredients in their food so the chocolate used in mochas are actually made in house using Callebaut chocolates and raw sugar. No white sugar is used in the recipes making it wholesome and extra yummy. That being said, if you want to take pictures of your cup of Mocha RM12 do it quick because the art won’t stay long and still due to the fresh ingredients used to make the chocolate bit.

Funny how some peach teas remind us of air fresheners. Try out the Iced Shaken Peach Tea RM12 here. It's refreshing with a lovely and very natural taste of peaches. Extra special because they also use Earl Grey tea for added flavour and body. Nothing overly sweet and makes for a perfect drink on hot days.

Someone mentioned that they could not see the menu at Cat in the Box. That’s strange because the menu is everywhere. The drinks menu is right in your face on your right as you walk in. Savoury is on another board while desserts are on another. Nicely divided yet within a few feet from each other and spelled out loud and clear so one can plan their meals accordingly. Done with the drinks menu, we now move on for the savoury!

Their savoury menu is nice and simple. Not too many choices but just right for a café. There’re sandwiches, pies and even lasagna. Weekdays are special with lunchboxes complete with a main, drinks and dessert for RM25.

Having had a long run in the morning, I was hungrier than normal. Between my sis and I, we shared a Roycohn Turkey Ham Sandwich RM15. Hearty like my own homemade sandwich, this has a generous serving of fresh and crisp lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and wholegrain mustard to compliment the turkey ham.

Pies are sourced from a home chef. It’s simple, hearty and nothing like the commercial pies that we get at many other cafes. Each pie is served with a side salad to make the pie meal a wholesome one. The Chicken and Potato Pie RM13.50 is a must for carb lovers. Creamy potato mash with bits of chicken in between, this is actually a very filling pie (I highly recommend this to my athlete pals to load up on before their race day).

A little spicy and very flavourful is the Fancy Curried Lamb Pie RM15. The crust holds the filling of potatoes and generous serving of curried lamb. It’s spicy but not pungent. A good match with tea – and they serve quality Harney & Sons tea here!

Dessert is a must. Quite a few to choose from but I had to have the Affogato RM14. Served with Fat Baby’s Salted Caramel ice cream, it is a lovely mix of sweet, bitter, creamy goodness in a glass. Brilliant. So good that my sis happily finished it and forgot that I only had one teaspoon of it.

It’s all fine. There’s no need to get mad. I had my own indulgence in the form of a dense and rich Callebaut Mocha Brownie made with espresso, hazelnuts (lots of it) served with Fat Baby’s Salted Caramel or Vanilla ice cream RM10.

Don't drool!

The brownie is without ice cream and I wholeheartedly agree with what’s written on the board - “But Why?”. And they’re right, there’s no reason not to indulge or enjoy a brownie without ice cream. So go ahead and enjoy the whole works!

A return is definitely in order. There’s so much more that I want to try, especially their tea, cookies and of course more coffee. BTW, the owners are cat lovers, so feel free to chat with them on cats like I did!
