CNY 2016: China Treasures @ KLGCC

China Treasures in KLGCC is not just another restaurant in a golf club. This is one restaurant that churns out good Chinese cuisine just about every visit that we make to this club. Usher in the year of the Fire Monkey at China Treasure with an impressive pork free CNY menu in a just as impressive set up. Book early and you might just be able to secure tables with a good view of the golf course that looks really magnificent during sunset.

A highly recommended pork free option in Petaling Jaya has always been Zuan Yuan @ One World Hotel. This CNY, Zuan Yuan whips up an impressive menu. Some traditional dishes and definitely some interesting new dishes too.

CNY 2016: Lai Ching Yuen @ Grand Millenium Hotel

If you want a porky CNY meal, then Lai Ching Yuen remains one of the few restaurants in hotel that whips out a porky menu. A popular favourite with many Cantonese cuisine enthusiast and of course a must visit when our relatives return from Australia, Canada and Singapore. Why? Food is good after all these years and because it holds many memories of good meals with our loved ones.

Celestial Court @ Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur whips out a luxurious CNY menu to usher in the year of the monkey. Diners can opt for yee sang with ingredients such as Boston Lobster, Longevity Peachm Marinated Preserved Truffle Boston Lobster Meat and even contemporary options of Bananas and Chinese Pear.

Take a pick of the 4 menus priced between RM1988nett to RM2688nett for a standard table of 10 pax. The dishes are also available ala carte if you are dining in a smaller group.

We sampled a few dishes from the 4 menu. They were all memorable and impressive. In fact, I can't put a finger to fault anything that Chef Vincent Loo and his team whipped out. A sentiment that many of my dining companions agreed too.
Celestial Court Boston Lobster Yee Sang with Peach
Undoubtedly luxurious and auspicious yee sang that will please more than just visual and taste buds. 
Yee Sang with Jelly Fish Flower, Monkey Head Mushrooms and Bananas in Plum Sauce
An interesting take with bananas in yee sang. Tasty twist to the usual ingredients / fruits used. Certainly would love to have more bananas in it!
Yee Sang with Sliced Baby Abalone and Snow Pear in Traditional Style
Delicious even in a traditional style. A plus point if you love peanuts like the hubster and I both do.
Thick Broth with Baby Lobster, Shredded Jade Abalone, Dried Scallop and Sea Cucumber
A traditional thick soup that is utterly comforting.
Braised Superior Bird's Nest Broth with Assorted Seafood and Spinach
Not your usual bowl of CNY or soup at Chinese meals. A thick but light soup of spinach with assorted seafood and bird's nest. I reckon that this will be popular with many ladies since the ingredients all are precious ingredients for better skin.
Braised Superior Bird's Nest Broth with Assorted Seafood and Spinach
 Braised Goose Web, Abalone, Sea Cucumber and Garden Greens.
I personallu loved the goose web though I am not much a of goose meat fan. This is braised just right with flavours of the superior sauce and coupled with the goodness of abalone and goji berry makes this a finger licking dish. Perfect with a bowl of rice so that the sauce is not wasted!
Sauteed Fresh Scallop and Sliced Cuttlefish with Flower Fungus and Gardens Greens
in Spicy Beijing Sauce
Appetizing combination of ingredient. Subtle richness from pine nuts with the sweetness of scallops, crush of vegetable and slightly spicy sauce. Brilliant!
Duo Combination of Tiger King Prawns, Deep Fried with Spicy Chilli Salt
and Sauteed in Sichuan Style.
Tiger King Prawns Sauteed in Sichuan Style is a juicier / saucier preparation. Right prawn size ensures that diners get a juicy bite of the flesh that boast of the Sichuan flavours.
Tiger King Prawns Deep Fried with Spicy Chilli Salt is a personal favourite. The shell is crunchy enough for lazy diners to eat the shell too!
Braised E-fu Noodles with Seafood, Dried Oyster and Bean Sprout in Abalone Sauce
A lovely change from the usual fried rice or waxed meat rice. Delicious flavours from the noodle itself coupled with the rich and sweet goodness of scallops, prawns, fish and dried oysters. So good that I had a second helping!
Double Boiled Bird's Nest with Red Dates, Sweet Pear, White Ginseng and Snow Fungus
Nourishing goodness that also soothes the body especially with the current CNY hot spell. More bird's nest goodness for the ladies too!

CNY 2016 @ Lai Po Heen, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur

CNY calls for reunion meals. There's plenty to have with family, friends, colleagues, associates etc. Lai Po Heen @ Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur comes highly recommended especially when you don't have a huge group to dine with because they have menus for small numbers instead of the usual table for 8 to 10 pax!

Take your pick of three 8-course set menus offered Fortune @ RM278 per pax, Prosperity @ RM388 per pax  and Wealth @ RM628 per pax. Note the minimum order for 4 pax available for lunch and dinner.

Diners also have the option of choosing from 5 types of yee sang at Lai Po Heen. Available for lunch and dinner and are priced from RM138nett to RM488nett. The options are Sliced Abalone in Thai dressing, Yellow Fin Tuna and Salmon, Soft Shell Crab and Snow Pear, Salmon and Assorted Vegetables as well as Assorted Vegetables and Shredded Fruits in Sesame Dressing. 

Our review kicks of with a yee sang of Yellow Fin Tuna and Salmon. Vibrant colours and  flavours. Of course because it is Yellow Fin Tuna, the hubster says this is his favourite yee sang thus far.

Our dinner of the Prosperity Menu @ RM388 per pax is an 8 course meal.
Double boiled abalone soup with morel mushroom and Maca
六六畜兴旺 鲍鱼羊肚菌玛卡湯
The benefits of soup is a long list. Most importantly is that it hydrates and nourishes the body with the ingredients used. Lai Po Heen's double boiled soup is luzurious with abalone, sea cucumber morel mushrooms and a traditional herb Maca.
Steamed omega rich grouper with chopped chili paste and ginger parsley paste
一帆风顺来 鴛鴦蒸龍虎斑
Steamed fish served with 2 different toppings. The classic ginger coriander paste and spicy chilli paste. A lovely presentation of colours.
Poached corn fed chicken with Chef’s creation dipping sauce
富甲添姿彩 味淋菜園雞
Corn fed chicken explains the more vibrant yellow coloured skin. Marinated and poached just right, served with Chef's special recipe of minced ginger, spring onion and soy sauce. 
Wok fried Ming prawn with fragrant chili paste
花开富贵年 辣醬香爆蝦球
If you love prawns and hate the task of peeling the shells, then this wok fried ming prawn is perfect. Deshelled fresh prawns cooked with a special chilli saice, not too spicy but fragrant.

A luxurious claypot filled with braised treasures of abalone, fresh scallops, fish maw, fatt choy and mushrooms with pak choy for colour and crunch. 
Fried healthy grain rice with golden pumpkin and sea treasure
新春乐团圆 金葫蘆海味五穀飯
The rice might look a tad wet but do not be fooled. This is healthy brown rice fried with an assortment of delicious ingredients including dried oysters, dried oysters, dried scallops, prawns and healthy sweet pumpkins.
Fried healthy grain rice with golden pumpkin and sea treasure
Chilled osmanthus jelly with crunchy water chestnut cake
丰年高高升 馬蹄桂花糕
A simple and delicate dessert of fragrant osmanthus jelly with some contrasting bite from the water chestnut cake. A refreshing end and good palate cleanser to the myriad of flavours from the dinner.

CNY 2016: The Emperor @ Dorsett Grand Subang

The Emperor in Grand Dorsett Subang is one of our favourite pork free Chinese restaurant. This year, diners can choose from 3 sets of 8 course CNY feast priced at RM1,188nett, RM1,388nett and RM1,588nett.

CNY is not complete without yee sang. A Malaysian tradition that made its way all over Asia. The Emperor whips out a refreshing mango salmon yee sang to make the best of the current fruit season. The prices of yee sang start from RM58nett and with every purchase of Yee Sang, guests can indulge in selected dishes for RM8nett only.

Nourishing goodness that is super tasty too. So good that even lil kids on our table slurped them up.

Crispy skin and perfectly marinated making it utterly addictive. 
Marinated jelly fish for a contrast of texture and flavours from the duck and chicken. Very well received by the folks at our table.
Steamed Grouper "Hong Kong" Style
Ugly looking dish that taste utterly good. Steamed just right, plump flesh with superior sauce. My favourite for the night to go with a bowl of white rice.
Wok-fried Tiger Prawns with Curry Leaf and Lemon Grass
Prawns are a must have for reunion dinners. "Har" in Cantonese sounds like laughter and this finger licking good prawns had us all happily laughing during our meal since we all peeled the shells with our hands like happy kids.
Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Diced Chicken and Yam
Double-boiled Fuji Apples with Snow Fungus and Honey Dates
A simple and classic tongsui that is refreshing after a heavy feasting. 
Deep-fried Chinese New Year Cake with Mochi Green Tea Paste
Sticky goodness in both the niangao (CNY cake) and mochi.

Ah Fa Chinese Restaurant

"Dish was so spicy that it floored me. I was on my knees (literally). Had stomach cramps. Couldn't walk at all." And that was my hubster's description of Ah Fa Chinese Restaurant in Pudu after our dinner there last night. Poor guy had to numb his tongue with ice cream and could not drive home immediately after dinner since he had wobbly legs.

We drove pass Ah Fa on 1st January 2016 after dinner with my in laws at MunKee down the street. Saw a long queue of people at 8pm but we had no idea what it served. Made it a point that we shall return one day earlier in the evening if we are in the vicinity. And thanx to my bad headache, we knocked off work yesterday and decided to check out Ah Fa not knowing what they served. But with my nasty headache, I really didn't want to think much and said "We will eat whatever the place whips out. Don't make me think!".

We were there at 530pm. Only 2 tables were filled. Perfect because I wasn't in the mood to wait or queue for my food. We found a corner table next to some plants and the lady boss came quickly with the menu. Oh darn...I didn't know what to make out of menu but she was quick to explain in Mandarin that I had options of RM88 of shell fish or RM99 of fish and shell fish. There was 6 levels of spiciness to choose from. She said most folks opt for B or C. In fact C which was 小辣 "small spicy" was potent enough for many of their customers. I was in a mood for spicy food for the last few days and we had plenty of fish over the weekend. Thus the hubster ordered D 中辣 "medium spicy" with only shell fish RM88. We were warned that 中辣 was really very spicy but we decided to go ahead with our choice.

It's a wait time of approximately 10 minutes before you are served. A portable stove is placed on our table followed by the pot / tray of our food. It sizzles and bubbles with aromatic chili. Be prepared that you might just sneeze if you inhale the steam directly like the folks who sat at the table beside us.
Looks spicy? This is 中辣 "medium spicy".
Huge prawns, squid and clams on a bed of assorted vegetables including big bean sprouts 
and mushrooms.
Lots of chili, more chili, garlic, onions and tomatoes add flavour to the otherwise clear broth. An influence of Hunan (lady boss) and Malaysian (the boss).
Small and potent chili!
If you can't eat spicy very well while your dining mates love the spicy stuff big time, then do not pour the soup or vegetables directly onto your white rice. Ask for a plate and do you deshelling etc on a plate and leave your rice nice and plain.
Big, fresh prawn with roe.
Smaller prawns but still huge and fresh. Equally good are the squid and clams.

Awesome spiciness with fresh seafood. RM94 for the option of shellfish, 2 plates of rice and 5 glasses of cold tea. A good deal considering the size and generous portions of ingredients.

Some handy advise if you dine at Ah Fa Chinese Restaurant in Pudu:
• Keep your drinks handy! Between the hubster and I, it was 5 glasses of cold chinese tea and 500ml water from my own water bottle.
 • If you can't take spicy well, option B 微辣 is slightly spicy. And the good thing is that Ah Fa Chinese Restaurant in Pudu can add more chili if you find your order not spicy enough.
Option B 微辣 "slightly spicy" with prawns, fish, squid and clams for RM99
• Switch off the flames. Food feels spicier when it is hot. Keep it bubbling for a short while to ensure the ingredients are cooked properly.
• A creamy ice cream will help ease your tongue after this hot meal. And if you find your tummy irritated by the extreme spiciness, yogurt will help ease the gut and put things right.

Thank you for bringing me to Ah Fa Chinese Restaurant in Pudu. I am sorry that you had to suffer to eat the spiciness that kept me happy yet it was so spicy that you had to go down on your knees and ended up throwing out your dinner. I am sorry that you had to endure the wobbly legs, heavy sweat just because this spicy meal was what I needed to satisfy my chili cravings and ease my headache. The next time we return, let's just order 2 portions. One Option B 小辣 "little spicy" or not spicy at all for you while I stick to my Option D 中辣 "medium spicy" for me. I promise I will bring an ice box with ice cream for you too. I love you Hubster!
